Add in the Jeremy Corbyn factor — not an issue in the Investment Association statistics published so far — and I would put money on the likelihood of four months of consecutive net redemptions extending to seven by the time the December fund statistics are published early next year. Speaking to leading financial advisers in the past couple of days, there is a strongly held view that investors should NOT be shunning income-friendly UK shares. Jason Hollands is a director of wealth manager Tilney and a big supporter of investing for income. Patrick Connolly, a chartered financial planner with Chase de Vere, agrees.

This Is It (Michael Jackson song)

When other investors have sold out, it is often a good time to buy. With interest rates at low levels and many UK stocks out of favour, the dividend yield on most UK equities — and UK equity income funds — is higher than four per cent. That is a very good starting point for investors.

Of course, there are caveats — for example, economic slowdown both here and globally impacting on the ability of UK companies to continue growing dividends, and the Corbyn factor or uncertainty resulting from a future hung Parliament. And yes, there may be yet more stock market volatility in the months ahead.

But the long-term case for investing in dividend friendly companies remains a robust one. When dividends are factored in, only one of the 26 — Imperial — comes up short. For the 26, annual dividends rose on average by 11 per cent, compared to 6. Such analysis is historic and so does not mean that all 26 will continue to keep growing their dividends.

Indeed, the table shows that forecast dividend growth for some of them — Standard Life Aberdeen and Prudential — will be non-existent or negative respectively. It is also important to realise that the dividends from some of the 26 still look meagre — despite more than ten years of consecutive growth.

'Rich relationships' are about mindset, not money

It is a point Richard Hunter, head of markets at fund platform Interactive Investor, believes income seekers should not overlook. He points to technology giant Halma — one of the 26 — as an example. Yet its dividend yield is still only around the 1 per cent level. So Mould says investors in search of the next generation of dividend growth champions may be wise to burrow through the FTSE Index.

He has identified eight FTSE companies see table above that he believes have the potential yes, the potential, not a guarantee to become dividend champions. Some investors may prefer to obtain UK equity income via an investment fund or stock market- listed investment trust. For growth-orientated investors, these funds also work effectively because income can be reinvested.
